Responsibilities - Essential Functions
The State Executive Director of the MI- Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will include the following responsibilities.

Vision
The State Executive Director is responsible for setting the vision for the MI-SBDC network to ensure evolving needs and emerging trends of the small business community are being met. Providing leadership in the implementation of that vision and the deployment of resources to meet the vision is critical in this role.

Funding
The State Executive Director is responsible for securing funding from the Small Business Administration (SBA), assisting with attaining matching funds from host/organizations, and maintaining the cooperative agreement between the U.S. Small Business Administration and the State/Regional host.

Partnerships/Business Development
The State Executive Director is responsible for developing and maintaining strong working and collaborative relationships with a wide variety of constituents, including the SBA in Washington, D.C. as well as the Michigan district office; Michigan state government, especially areas related to economic development; the "regional hosts" that house SBDC offices; and other organizations and entities involved in helping to strengthen the economy of Michigan through business development.

Communication
The State Executive Director is responsible for maintaining strong relationships with state lawmakers and clearly articulating the value of the SBDC network for their respective local businesses. In addition, the State Director will engage with the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) and provide a leadership role in advancing the strategic goals of Michigan small businesses.

Management
The State Executive Director is responsible for maintaining ASBDC accreditation through continuous improvement processes, managing the "state" office staff, monitoring and guiding the statewide network's SBA goals and expected outcomes, and overseeing the measurement of economic impact from SBDC services. The State Director is also responsible for maintaining a strong relationship with all SBDC regional offices and hosts to facilitate planning, integrate work and services, and maintain a consistent purpose to better serve Michigan small businesses.

Required Qualifications and Education
The applicant must have earned a master's degree in a relevant field (MBA, MPA, etc.), six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, and also includes three (3) years of leadership experience. The State Director must possess experience in federal grant management, business development methodology and management tools. The Director must have a demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of public and private stakeholders who are critical to the success of the SBDC network. The State Director must have strong "dot connecting" abilities, be able to identify emerging opportunities and threats for early appropriate action. The applicant must have experience preparing and managing budgets, demonstrate sensitivity and desire to promote diversity; demonstrate ability to work effectively with broad constituency; and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  
Preferred Qualifications and Education
Experience in a Small Business Development Center (SBDC) or other consulting service provider; experience building sustained partnerships; demonstrate coalition building; stakeholder communication; management of professional employees; experience obtaining external funding/fundraising; and program implementation through sub-contractors.
